I have been wearing pedometers for more than ten years and was happy with them, except for their short life span. I didn’t see the need for anything fancier. But, now I have to admit that we are walking a lot more with the activity trackers. If I have been sitting at the computer for too long, the wristband buzzes and tells me to move. Then we go out and take a walk. Another change that has made it easier is to take more, shorter walks rather than do it all at once. In the past, something (hips, knees, or back) would be hurting after four or five miles. In the last three days, we have covered over five miles and nothing hurts. It helps that we are about a mile from the grocery store and our mailbox at the UPS store. That racks up two miles. Even taking the trash out makes for a good walk.
Speaking of trash, Cuppy, the snowman, traveled to the dumpster last week. I hated to throw him away, but there is no place to store him. So I stood him atop my granny cart and off we went.
We have had a lot of rain and clouds over the past week or so. It has been cold and windy too. Often, there is a strip of bright blue/green on the horizon when it is cloudy. Sometimes wider, but usually narrow like in this picture. It might be the edge of the shallow water and grass.
A Snowy Egret and a Tricolor Heron have been hanging around the end of our canal for the past few days. They like to stand on the yellow floats to fish or sleep. Several times, they have squabbled over territory. Other times they have been close together peacefully.
The Snowy Egret is distinguished by his yellow feet and the yellow patch at the base of the bill. The backs of his legs are also yellow.
After this morning’s squabble, the heron moved to the mangrove roots across the canal. It was there again when we took a late-afternoon walk.

It is a Garmin VivoSmart wristband. We tried one from Walgreens, but it did not hook up to the computer, just iPhones. I looked at some FitBits but didn’t like the look of them – too big.

I love the photographs. They are putting me in such a calming place..and I LOVE the granny cart! I had a beat up one when I was living in NYC–laundry, clothes…anything I was too lazy to carry went in one! Nice, nice post!!!

Yes, that granny cart is one of my prized possessions. It was essential when we were living and cruising on our boat for groceries and laundry. Now, we have a car that we tow behind the motorhome, but when we are in the keys for the winter, the grocery store is less than a mile away and walking there is part of our excercise plan.

Love the Tri-colored heron capture! Can I ask which campground you are at in the Keys? And is it one you return to each year? We hope to stay in the Keys for some time next winter in our 44′ RV with tow. Any good advice on where to stay for our size? 🙂

There are RV parks all up and down the keys. But, I suspect you had better make a reservation now and brace yourself for the cost. A large park here in Marathon has just been bought by a developer to build a resort. I don’t know where all those folks are going to go next year. Our RV park is a condo. but there are a few sites that the owners rent out. I’ll see what I can find out.
Sunshine Key is at the other end of the Seven Mile Bridge; it looks really nice. Big Pine Fishing Lodge (or maybe Fish Camp) is another we see while driving down route 1. There are several on Grassy Key too. We have never stayed in any RV parks here so we really don’t know anything about them. You might try Trip Advisor or an RV review site.
Where do you live on the bay? We lived in Lusby, just north of Solomons, MD. I lived my whole life in Maryland until we retired and moved on our boat.

Thanks Dinata for the Keys info, I’ll do some searching. I checked out Bluewater 10 miles from Key West, and WOW the cost was way up there. Of course, it’s Key West!
We live at Kent Narrows which channels between Kent Island and main land Eastern Shore Maryland, this is about 7-8 miles east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Annapolis). Know Solomons Island very well, one of our favorite Bay destinations, both by boat & car, only 1 1/2 hours away. So you have to know Stoney’s on Broomes Island & their awesome jumbo lump crab cakes, the best on the Bay! We’ve only been RVing part-time for 3 years but have boated the CBay for 25 years. 🙂

I sailed out of Annapolis for many years. Then, we cruised our motor yacht all over the bay. In fact, we bought it at Kent Narrows and moved it to Solomons. We had some pretty good crab cakes at Kent Narrows too. Oh yes, we were regulars at Stoney’s.
We were still living aboard our boat in the keys when we bought a small RV (Navion). Then we stopped cruising the boat up and down the coast and put the boat in the yard for the summers and drove that little RV all over the US and Canada for five years. We sold the boat and bought our Holiday Rambler Neptune motorhome four years ago. There are a lot of similarities to boating. Some aspects are better on the motorhome and some better on the boat. Andy was getting tired of boat maintenance so the RV is much better. We can go more places in a motorhome, but we don’t make as many friends as we did boating. You never see the same people twice in the motorhome. We don’t have to worry about the weather so much or worry about the anchor dragging at night. Traveling is nicer on the boat, in an RV, we are just driving. That is unless it is in a beautiful place.
When we bought the motorhome (36 feet), we discovered how expensive RV parks are in the keys. We bought an RV lot in this condo RV community. I call it a ghetto, but, hey, it’s keysey and we can walk to the grocery store.
