Patricia, of Hugo House, sent me a final proof of Big Creek yesterday. Andy and I both read it today. I was shocked how many errors I found yet again and I am not even a good proofreader. It took me all day to read and markup with only a break for lunch and then a walk around the Alliance grounds in the late afternoon. Andy went through it much faster than I did. He said he is faster but, I am more thorough. I found so many errors that I am going to read it again tomorrow to make sure I catch as many as I can.
Oh that’s disappointing, I hope you get them all this time! 😊

I’m sure I missed some. I’ve read it so many times that I don’t even see half-sentences anymore. I just read what I meant to say. This is extremely frustrating!

I wrote a book detailing my family history research to be given as a Christmas gift for every member of my family. I edited and edited, read and re-read, sent it to 2 people (one a teacher, one a university lecturer) amd when ai got it back from the printer I read it again. Still there were typos! Even when I’ve taken it off the shelf since then, I still find a small mistake!

Well, I guess it is comforting to know that I’m not the only one! I hate to find a typo in a book I am reading. I don’t know why it annoys me so, but it does. I’ll probably be pulling my hair out when I find them in my own book!

Some of it is my fault for not being good with Word. But there were a number of errors introduced while making corrections. There were so many errors that I think I must have been sent an older version. I can’t believe anyone proofed it. I sent it back tonight with some unkind words.

I think many of us feel like pulling our hair out over editing. It’s the tiny things with me, like missing out speech marks when I correct things suggested by my editor. In other words, I correct the mistake in question, but make others in places that were OK before. (My typing skills are abysmal.) I’ve even had to correct a few such things since the books were published – which is easy enough to do with ebooks, but not so easy with the print versions. Editing is such a long, drawn out process. I know you’ve got there by now because I’ve peeped at your latest post – which I’ll get to later on. I thought I’d just check on your journey to publication first.

The journey was frustrating. I was expecting more guidance from the publisher. I started out with rough blogs. That is still the heart of it with no editorial suggestions other than to reduce the word count and to add some essays. I had already broken up the short anecdotal short paragraphs with more background on various subjects. I just hope that when it is finally out, that I won’t be too embarrassed by all the errors I find in print!
