I finished another read-through of Big Creek this morning. We celebrated by picking up sandwiches at Subway and going to Oceanfront Park to eat them. There was a strong wind from the east so we found a table with a little protection from the mangroves. This was our view:
An older man and woman sat at the other table, but left after a few minutes. We had the pavilion to ourselves.
After eating, I walked out on the little pier and saw a huge patch of sea grass blown up against the shore. This is a common thing here in the keys. Depending on the wind, the grass will accumulate along the shore, in canals, and in marinas. If it stays there too long, it will stink to high heaven when it rots. That is why our RV park canal has those ugly floating barriers and bubblers, to keep the grass out.

Then we took our walk around the park perimeter. A group of Cubans was in the larger pavilion. They talk very loud. No, they yell their conversations. They were having a good time and we didn’t mind. But, then they turned up the music from the car. We could hear it all over the park. I don’t know why the guy isn’t deaf by now. But, then, maybe he is deaf from listening to loud music and that is why he has to have such large speakers.

The best thing about it is the warm winter. The ocean is beautiful. But, there are negatives too. It’s a long way from anywhere. Here is Marathon, we have four large stores: Home Depot, Publix grocery store, Winn-Dixie grocery store, and the worst K-Mart ever. There are some small shops and a lot of bars and restaurants. Key West is worth a visit, parts are charming, but it is also a drinking and rowdy town with a lot of characters.

I never would’ve thought that the sea grass would stink. It’s always something, isn’t it?
Re-reading and editing can definitely is tedious.

What a lovely spot for a picnic lunch. Took me back to the last time I was in (on?) the Keys. 90th birthday party for The Dude’s aunt. On Islamadora (sp?) Wonderful. Felt a whole world away. Which, in a sense, it was.

It certainly is, in a different way, a whole world apart. It happens as soon as you leave the mainland and drive across the 18-mile causeway to Key Largo. Although US1 can be pretty ugly, lined with gas stations and everything else imaginable, when you cross a bridge between the keys and get a view of the beautiful blue water, you can forget about the t-shirt shops and fast-food places. The farther south/west you go, the more water you see. People are different here too. There are the wealthy people with the huge oceanfront homes. There are a good number of homeless people who also come here for the warm winter. Drinking and partying is very popular here. We have more than our share of free spirits and runaways (from another life). It is a vacation place. We love it.
