Andrew Peter Misovec

Andrew Peter Misovec, ‘Andy’, eighty-eight, died at home on April 11, 2025 in Leesburg FL, after succumbing to a series of mini-strokes over a period of years. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dinata, and his children, Kathleen M. Misovec, Andrew C. Misovec (and his wife Joanne), Michael J. Misovec, Jennifer L. Barton (and her husband George), and Christopher T. Moulton. His grandchildren are Andrew, George, and Elizabeth Misovec, and Owen and Cam Barton. He is predeceased in death by his brother Paul and his beloved daughter Margaret (Peggy),

Andy was born in New York City, NY on August 22, 1936 to Mary Elizabeth (Trojack) Misovec and Charles Misovec Jr.  With younger brother Paul Vincent Misovec, the family lived in Bayside, New York and loved to tell good stories and jokes and loved to laugh.

He graduated from Bayside High School in 1954.  To fund college with the G.I. bill, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, completed basic training as an aircraft mechanic, and spent his entire service term in the Occupation of Germany. He was discharged from the army in August 1957. Throughout his life, when the subject of military service came up, he would say he was never shot at – and, if he was, they missed.

Returning home, Andy married Margaret Mary (Smith) Misovec, enrolled in Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and began a lifelong passion for learning, education, science and math.  At college, he developed into what was to become the core of his work life, a thoughtful observer, a persistent explorer, rigorous mathematical analyst. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy in 1968 and his thesis was titled, “Ring-Stiffened Orthotropic Circular Cylinder Under Hydrostatic Pressure”.   He then became a Professor at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute.

Andy was a professor, an applied research scientist and an engineer. He specialized in Applied Mechanics and did impactful research on the effects of underwater explosions on submarines and surface ships. His work helped to protect the vessels and their crews from torpedoes and mines. He often said that his customers were the Navy sailors and he only wanted to work on their defense, rather than on offensive weapons.

Andy married Dinata (Dail Moulton) Misovec in 1992. They lived in Lusby Maryland with children Jennifer and Christopher.

He was passionate about teaching and returned to it later in his career, teaching courses at Howard University, the Navy Post-graduate School, and the Florida Institute of Technology among others. When asked what he did for a living, he would modestly respond that he taught math and engineering. Andy slowly retired, still working on technical problems on his own for many years.

Andrew Misovec lived a long, fulfilling, and happy life.  He loved the ocean and took his children to the beach and other outings as often as he could. His sparkling personality and quick wit kept gatherings with family and friends lively and fun. He loved babies, small children and Italian food. He was an avid skier, diver, and jogger. Perhaps, he will be most remembered for his terrible habit of making an awful pun from anything anyone might say. Little else would give him as much pleasure as hearing others groan at his performance. For many years, Andy wanted to spend every minute and forever with his beloved wife Dinata. Retirement was filled with adventures of living aboard and cruising his motor yacht and then traveling in motorhomes across the U.S. and Europe and having fun with his loved ones. He is sorely missed.
