September 14, 2015 – Moab to Virgin, Utah

There is not much to say about most travel days, including this one.  We took off at 0819 and headed north to I-70, then west to I-15, and then south to Virgin, near Zion.

When I started Sao up this morning, I saw a small animal in the backup camera taking off. It was too quick to identify it, but could have been a small rabbit.

I forgot to mention yesterday that Moab was a driving destination.  We filled the car with gas three times in one week.  That was a lot of driving.

One bit of excitement, for me anyway was a reef viewpoint.  I pulled off the side of the road and climbed a small hill (on foot) next to the parking lot.  This is the reef, as in Capitol Reef National Park, that is one side of the Waterpocket Fold.  It is huge.

I could see that I-70 is cut through the reef. It is a very narrow gap, four lanes and a bit more.

b2 Cut Through Reef

I was surprised, when we got back on I-70, to see how thick the reef is.  It is not just a wall of rocks. The rest of Utah scenery today was also dramatic.  There were huge rocks and deep canyons.

We passed through the Fish Lake National Forest and were in tree country again.  At first, they were sparse, small trees growing out of the rocks.  Later, there were large trees as well.  It was refreshing to see green hillsides again.  We were surprised to see some splashes of orange on the hillsides and then realized that it is nearly fall.

We crossed a summit at 7,886 feet. I think that was our highest elevation today.

We stopped at the Walmart in Richfield, UT to eat a Subway sandwich for lunch.  We also bought a box of Cheerios and a box of Pop Tarts for Son Christopher.

We reached I-15 at 1350.  I was disappointed when Helga, the GPS did not say for us to head south to “Vegas, baby!”

We got to the Zion River RV Resort at 1611.  This is a very nice place.  We would not have stayed here, or any place else this nice (expensive) except that the other RV parks were full. I am perfectly satisfied with any RV park with a electric, water, and sewer hookup. We never use any other amenities.
